Rowan

Beaded rowan tree

For making a beaded rowan tree we need:
- size 11 seed beads of green and red colors;
- wire 0.2 mm in diameter for basic weaving;
- a small segment (about 15-20 cm) of thick aluminum or copper wire of 2 mm in diameter for a trunk of the tree;
- brown thread for winding the branches and trunk;
- a pot into which we’ll place the tree.

First of all we should make rowan leaves. Every leaf consists of 9 identical small leaflets made out of green seed beads. For each leaflet take a wire of 25 cm in length and make leaflets using the parallel beading technique and the following pattern:
1st row: 1 bead;
2nd row: 2 beads;
3rd row: 2 beads;
4th row: 2 beads;
5th row: 1 bead.

So make 9 leaflets for a leaf.

After that assemble a leaf out of these leaflets. Take 3 leaflets

and twist them together close to their bases.

Straighten the leaflets pointing the central one upwards and the other two - sideways from it in the opposite directions.

Take another leaflet and attach in to the leafstalk a few millimeters below the first row of leaflets. Point this new leaflet in the same direction as the leaflet above it.

Take one more leaflet and attach it near the previous one pointing it in the opposite direction. To make it easier, bend the wire under the new leaflet at a right angle to the leaflet,

then place this leaflet close to the leafstalk at the point where the previous leaflet is attached,

and after that twist the wire of the new leaflet to the leafstalk.

In the same manner attach four more leaflets to the leafstalk. So we’ve got a rowan leaf consisting of 9 leaflets.

For my rowan tree I made 14 leaves out of 126 small leaflets. The more leaves you make, the larger and the lusher your rowan tree will be.

Besides the leaves, we should make bunches of rowan berries. To make them use the beading technique that we used earlier for making stamens of the bellflower.
For rowan berries use red seed beads. First, make a small bunch. Take a wire of 60 cm in length and string 1 bead onto it, placing this bead about 10-12 cm from one of the wire’s ends.

Twist together both ends of the wire for about 1.5 cm from the bead.

String one more bead onto the longer end of the wire and place it at a distance of about 2 cm from the end of the previous twist.

After that, holding the bead, once again twist the wires from the bead till the end of the previous twist.

Repeat this process 8 more times, each time stringing the bead onto the longer end of the wire.

Then twist together both ends of the wire. We’ve got a small bunch of rowan berries.

For each big bunch of rowan berries we should make 3 such small bunches.

To make a big bunch, twist these 3 small bunches together.

For my rowan tree I made 7 such big bunches of rowan berries.

Before starting the assembling of the tree, take a brown thread and wind it round the wires below all the leaves and bunches for almost the entire length.

After that out of leaves and bunches make rowan branches. To make a branch attach one bunch to a leaf

and then a little below the bunch attach one more leaf.

So I made 7 branches, of two leaves and one bunch each.

Start assembling the tree. For the base of the trunk take an aluminum or copper wire of 2 mm in diameter of 20 cm in length. If you have no such a wire, you may use any rigid wire or even a wooden stick instead it.

Using an additional piece of thin wire attach one branch to the tip of this thick wire.

Then take a brown thread and wind it round the trunk under the branch for some distance.

After that using an additional piece of thin wire attach to the trunk all the others branches, placing them around the trunk at some distance from each other.

Do not forget to wind the trunk under the each branch by a brown thread.

In this manner attach all the branches and wind a thread around the trunk at its full length. Then tie a knot to fix the thread and trim the excess wires if needed.

Put the rowan tree into a suitable pot and straighten the branches and bunches.

The beaded rowan tree is finished!
