We have already got a few tutorials on beaded dogs on our site, but there are so many dog breeds that I can't stop making them.
Today we will make one more dog, a 3D poodle.
We will need:
- size 10/0 seed beads of two colors: the main color and black color. Out of the main color beads we will make the dog's head, ears, body, legs and tail. You can choose any color you like as the main color. It can be white, brown or apricot color and even light blue as mine. Out of black color beads we will make a nose and eyes, so we need only three such beads;
- wire 0.2 mm thick.
For making the poodle we will use the technique of three-dimensional beading on two segments of wire.
The main idea of three-dimensional beading on two segments of wire is that the each row in the beadwork consists of four tiers: upper, lower, left and right. So, making a row we should first make the upper tier, then make the lower tier, after that make the left tier and at last make the right tier. It is very important to keep the order of tiers during the beading process.
We have already met such a beading technique so you can learn the basics of three-dimensional beading on two segments of wire in this tutorial, it is a very detailed tutorial with step by step photos.
In this beadwork the upper tiers of beads will form the upper part of the poodle's head and then its back, the lower tiers of beads will form the poodle’s neck and then its tummy, and the side tiers of beads will form the poodle’s sidepieces.
For making the poodle we will use the following pattern:

For the poodle’s body with its head and tail we need two pieces of wire 150 cm long each.
For making poodle’s ears and legs we need five additional pieces of wire 40 cm long each.
So, take two pieces of wire 150 cm each and start beading.
1st and 2nd rows:
The 1st row consists of 1 black bead, and the each tier of the 2nd row consists of 1 main color bead.
Take one piece of wire and string 1 black bead and 1 main color bead. Place the beads on the middle of the wire. Hold the black bead and pass the end of the wire that comes out from that bead through the other bead (from its opposite side).
Tighten the wire trying its ends to be of equal length.
Take another piece of wire and pass it through the black bead. String 1 main color bead onto any end of that new piece of wire and pass its other end through that bead (from its opposite side).
Tighten the new piece of wire trying its ends to be of equal length.
We've made the 1st row (black bead) and the upper and the lower tiers of the 2nd row (main color beads).
Now at the each side between the upper and the lower tiers of the 2nd row make its left and right tiers, consisting of 1 main color bead each.
In all the next rows make tiers successively: first make the upper tier, then make the lower tier, after that make the left tier and at last make the right tier.
Please note, if we look at the next rows a specific row has the same number of beads in the side tiers but the number of beads in the upper and the lower tiers may differ from each other.
Continue beading according to the pattern.
3rd row:
Upper tier - 2 main color beads.
Lower tier - 2 main color beads.
Left and right tiers - 1 main color beads each.
4th row:
Upper tier - 4 main color beads.
Lower tier - 4 main color beads.
Left and right tiers - 2 main color beads each.
5th row:
Upper tier - string beads in the following order: 1 main color bead, 1 black bead, 3 main color beads, 1 black bead and 1 main color bead.
Lower tier - 7 main color beads.
Left and right tiers - 3 main color beads each.
For further beading we will only use beads of main color, thus I will not call the color of beads onwards.
6th row:
Upper tier - 10 beads.
Lower tier - 10 beads.
Left and right tiers - 3 beads each.
7th row:
Upper tier - 13 beads. Take an additional piece of wire for the poodle's ears and pass it through 9 middle beads of this tier.
Lower tier - 13 beads.
Left and right tiers - 4 beads each.
8th row:
Upper tier - 13 beads.
Lower tier - 16 beads.
Left and right tiers - 5 beads each.
9th row:
Upper tier - 12 beads. Take another additional piece of wire for the poodle's ears and pass it through 10 middle beads of this tier.
Lower tier - 17 beads. Take one more additional piece of wire and pass it through 5 middle beads of this tier. We will use this wire later for making poodle's forelegs.
Left and right tiers - 6 beads each.
Even the ends of the additional wires in the upper tiers of the 7th and 9th rows and make the poodle’s ears on them.
Both ears are the same, make them in flat ladder stitch using the following pattern:
1st row: 2 beads.
2nd row: 3 beads.
3rd row: 4 beads.
4th row: 4 beads.
5th row: 4 beads.
6th row: 3 beads.
After that continue making the poodle's body.
10th row:
Upper tier - 10 beads.
Lower tier - 17 beads.
Left and right tiers - 6 beads each.
11th row:
Upper tier - 7 beads.
Lower tier - 18 beads. Take another additional piece of wire for the poodle's forelegs and pass it through 4 middle beads of this tier.
Left and right tiers - 6 beads each.
Even the ends of the additional wires in the lower tiers of the 9th and 11th rows and make the poodle’s forelegs on them.
Both forelegs are the same, make them in 3D beading on two ends of wire:
1st row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
2nd row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
3rd row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
4th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
5th row: only the upper tier - 2 beads.
After making the forelegs continue making the poodle's body.
12th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 16 beads.
Left and right tiers - 5 beads each.
13th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 14 beads.
Left and right tiers - 4 beads each.
14th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 12 beads.
Left and right tiers - 4 beads each.
15th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 10 beads.
Left and right tiers - 3 beads each.
16th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 8 beads.
Left and right tiers - 3 beads each.
17th row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 6 beads.
Left and right tiers - 3 beads each.
18th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 4 beads. Take the last additional piece of wire and pass it through all the beads of this tier. We will use this wire later for making the poodle's hind legs.
Left and right tiers - 3 beads each.
19th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 4 beads.
Left and right tiers - 2 beads each.
20th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 3 beads.
Left and right tiers - 2 beads each.
21st row:
Upper tier - 3 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
Left and right tiers - 1 bead each.
Beading of the poodle’s body is completed.
Use the ends of the wire that come from the side tiers up to make the poodle’s tail.
We will use two other ends of the basic wire together with the ends of the additional wire in the lower tier of the 18th row later for making the hind legs.
So, make the tail.
Start in flat ladder stitch:
1st row: 1 bead.
2nd row: 1 bead.
3rd row: 1 bead.
4th row: 1 bead.
5th row: 1 bead.
Then continue in 3D beading:
6th row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 3 beads.
7th row:
Upper tier - 3 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
8th row: only the upper tier - 1 bead.
Each of the hind legs make in 3D beading:
1st row:
Upper tier - 5 beads.
Lower tier - 4 beads.
2nd row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 3 beads.
3rd row:
Upper tier - 3 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
4th row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
5th row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
6th row:
Upper tier - 2 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
7th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
8th row:
Upper tier - 4 beads.
Lower tier - 2 beads.
9th row: only the upper tier - 2 beads.
Beading is completed. Fix and cut off all the remaining wires.
The poodle is finished!
