Rooster and the full chicken family
We continue our series of beaded chickens. We have already made a young chicken and a hen. To get the full chicken family, today we will make a rooster. This chicken family can be an original Easter decoration, as well as a wonderful gift.
To make a beaded rooster I used:
- size 8 seed beads of six colors: orange, red, green, yellow, black and gray-pink;
- two 6 mm sequins;
- a wooden egg (you can also use a plastic egg);
- thin nylon fishing line (0,2 mm thick) and a beading needle.
I made a rooster using the same pattern that I used earlier for making a young chicken and a hen, with only a few differences.
So, to make a rooster, first take a wooden or plastic egg
and cover it with orange beads using the square stitch technique (you can learn this technique here).
Then out of red beads make a comb.
Next, out of sequins and black beads make eyes and out of red beads make a beak.
After that make wattles which haven’t met in the pattern earlier. First, pass the needle through the bead that is situated below and laterally from any side of the beak. Doing so, lead the needle in direction to the beak.
Then string onto the line 11 red beads
and pass the needle through the first bead of just added beads. This time lead the needle in direction from the beak.
Next, pass the needle through all the beads of the lower row of the beak that is close to the rooster’s body.
Tighten the line. One wattle is finished.
Now make another wattle at the other side of the beak: pass the needle through the bead that is located below and laterally the beak (remember to lead the needle in direction to the beak),
then string 11 red beads and pass the needle through the first bead of just added beads (remember to lead the needle in direction from the beak)
and after that pass the needle through all the beads of the lower row of the beak that is close to the rooster’s body.
Tighten the line. Both wattles are finished.
Now make wings of the rooster. Use the same pattern as for the wings of the chicken, but increase the size of the wings and make them colorful.
First, at one side of the rooster’s body choose 4 beads to which the wing will be attached. Those beads should be located diagonally by one bead from each other.
The wing consists of three segments.
For the 1st segment string onto the line 15 green and 9 yellow beads.
For the 2nd segment string 6 green and 9 yellow beads.
And for the 3rd segment of the wing string 15 green beads.
Next, make a tail. Use the same pattern as for the tail of the chicken, but again increase the size of the tail and make it colorful.
First, at the rooster’s back choose 4 beads to which the tail will be attached. Those beads should be located in one row by one bead from each other, symmetrically with respect to the central axis of the rooster that goes through the comb. I chose them in the 6th row from the bottom.
The tail consists of three segments.
The 1st segment consists of 15 green and 7 yellow beads.
The 2nd segment consists of 8 green and 7 yellow beads.
And the 3rd segment of the tail consists of 15 green beads.
With both wings and the tail our rooster now looks like that:

At last, make shanks with toes. I made them out of gray-pink beads and attached in the front of the body, in the 3rd row from the bottom so that the distance between the shanks was a little greater than the distance between the eyes of the rooster.
Now secure the line. The beaded rooster is finished!
Together with the hen and the young chicken they make up a lovely chicken family.
I put this chicken family into an improvised nest. It will be a perfect Easter gift!
