Today we will learn a new beading technique, the peyote stitch. Using this technique, we will make a beaded fabric with a picture of Zodiac sign Capricorn.
We will need:
- size 8 seed beads of two colors (I used white and red);
- nylon fishing line (0.2 mm thick) and a beading needle;
- stiff wire 0.5 mm thick (a piece approx. 10 cm long or even shorter; I used an unbent paper clip).
The whole beadwork requires a long line, so I recommend to take a line of a convenient length (about 1 meter) and as soon as it becomes too short secure it, then take another piece of line, weave it into the beadwork and continue weaving using this new segment of line.
As this is an even count peyote stitch, we will use a single needle for weaving.
First, tie on a stop bead. It prevents all the beads from sliding off of the line while you begin weaving.
String onto the line one white bead and place it approximately at 15 cm from the free end of the line.
Then pass the needle through that bead in direction from the free end of the line.
Tighten the line so that it wraps around the bead.
After that string beads onto the line in the following sequence: 3 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 5 white, 1 red and 1 white. Move all the beads close to the stop bead.
Now take a small piece of stiff wire and pass it through all the even beads counting from the free end of the line. Those beads will make up the 1st peyote row and the missed odd beads will make up the 2nd peyote row. Place all the beads as much as possible close to each other and pull the working end of the line tight.
All the next beads we will add one by one. The beads of the 3rd row will be placed between the beads of the 2nd row and at the same time - just above the beads of the 1st row.
The first bead in the 3rd row is white. String it onto the line and pass the needle through the nearest bead of the 2nd row.
Tighten the line. The last strung bead has taken the position directly above the extreme bead of the 1st row.
Then string one red bead and pass the needle through the next bead of the 2nd row.
Tighten the line.
Continue in the same way and add the third - white - bead in the 3rd row.
Then add beads in the 3rd row one by one in the following sequence: 2 red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, thus completing the 3rd row.
Start making the 4th row. String white bead and pass the needle through the nearest bead of the 3rd row.
Pay attention that after the each row the direction of weaving is reversed.
Tighten the line. The first bead of the 4th row has taken the position directly above the first bead of the 2nd row (that is the very first bead of our beadwork, the stop bead).
In the same way continue weaving the 4th row stringing beads one by one and each time passing the needle through the next bead of the 3rd row. Complete the 4th row adding beads in the following sequence: 2 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red, 1 white, 2 red.
All the other rows make in the same way.
In the 5th row the first bead is white
and the order of all the other beads in the 5th row is: 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 2 red, 1 white.
At this stage the rows in our beadwork can be distinguished clearly, so you can remove the wire from the 1st row.
Continue weaving using the following pattern:
6th row: 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 2 white, 3 red, 1 white beads.
7th row: 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 3 red beads.
8th row: 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 2 red, 1 white beads.
9th row: 1 white, 3 red, 3 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red beads.
10th row: 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 2 red, 1 white beads.
11th row: 2 white, 2 red, 1 white, 3 red, 1 white, 1 red beads.
12th row: 1 white, 1 red, 2 white, 3 red, 1 white, 1 red, 1 white beads.
13th row: 4 white, 1 red, 1 white, 4 red beads.
14th row: 2 white, 1 red, 3 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 1 white beads.
15th row: 1 white, 1 red, 5 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red beads.
16th row: 1 white, 1 red, 4 white, 1 red, 3 white beads.
17th row: 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 4 white, 1 red, 1 white beads.
18th row: 9 white, 1 red beads.
19th row: 1 white, 1 red, 3 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red, 1 white beads.
20th row: 2 white, 1 red, 1 white, 2 red, 2 white, 2 red beads.
21st row: 2 white, 3 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white beads.
22nd row: 1 white, 2 red, 3 white, 2 red, 2 white beads.
23rd row: 6 white, 1 red, 1 white, 2 red beads.
24th row: 2 white, 1 red, 7 white beads.
25th row: 6 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red beads.
26th row: 1 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white beads.
27th row: 3 white, 1 red, 3 white, 2 red, 1 white beads.
28th row: 4 white, 1 red, 2 white, 1 red, 2 white beads.
29th row: 4 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 1 white, 1 red, 1 white beads.
30th row: 2 white, 3 red, 1 white, 2 red, 2 white beads.
31st row: 7 white, 1 red, 2 white beads.
32nd row: 2 white, 2 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white beads.
33rd row: 3 white, 1 red, 2 white, 2 red, 2 white beads.
34th row: 3 white, 2 red, 1 white, 1 red, 3 white beads.
35th row: 3 white, 5 red, 2 white beads.
36th row: 3 white, 4 red, 3 white beads.
37th row: 4 white, 3 red, 3 white beads.
38th row: 10 white beads.
Weaving is completed.
Now secure the ends of the line. First, secure the working end of the line: pass it through several beads across the beadwork in a step-like pattern and then trim off the excess line. After that thread a needle on the starting tail of the line, weave it into the beadwork in the same manner as the working end and then trim it off.
Our Capricorn is finished! If you attach a ring for keys to this beaded fabric, you can use it as a keychain.
