Keychain with Aquarius (Zodiac sign) in even count peyote stitch
We continue a series of keychains with zodiac signs in peyote stitch. Today is the turn of Aquarius.
We will need:
- size 8 seed beads of five colors: white, light blue, dark blue, brown and yellow;
- nylon fishing line (0.2 mm thick) and a beading needle;
- stiff wire 0.5 mm thick (approx. 10 cm long; I used an unbent paper clip).
The whole beadwork requires a long line, so I recommend to take a line of a convenient length (about 1 meter) and as soon as it becomes too short - secure it, then take another segment of line, weave it into the beadwork and continue weaving using this new segment of line.
As this is an even count peyote stitch, we will use a single needle for weaving.
First, tie on a stop bead. It prevents all the beads from sliding off while you begin weaving.
String onto the line one white bead and place it approximately at 15 cm from the free end of the line.
Then pass the needle through that bead in direction from the free end of the line.
Tighten the line so that it wraps around the bead.
After that string beads onto the line in the following sequence: 1 white, 1 light blue and 17 white. Move all the beads close to the stop bead.
Now take a small piece of stiff wire and pass it through all the even beads counting from the free end of the line. Those beads will make up the 1st peyote row and the skipped odd beads will make up the 2nd peyote row. Place all the beads as much as possible close to each other and pull the working end of the line tight.
All the next beads we will add one at a time. I remind you that the basics of peyote stitch weaving technique you can learn from the tutorial here.
For the 3rd row add beads in the following sequence: 1 white, 1 light blue, 2 white, 1 light blue, 3 white, 2 light blue.
Continue weaving using the following pattern:
4th row: 1 white, 2 light blue, 2 white, 2 light blue, 1 white, 2 light blue beads.
5th row: 1 white, 2 light blue, 1 white, 2 light blue, 1 white, 3 light blue beads.
At this stage the rows in our beadwork can be distinguished clearly, so you can remove the wire from the 1st row.
6th row: 1 white, 2 light blue, 2 white, 5 light blue beads.
7th row: 1 white, 2 light blue, 1 white, 2 light blue, 1 white, 2 light blue, 1 white beads.

38th row: 7 white, 1 brown, 2 white beads.
39th row: 10 white beads.
Weaving is completed. Now secure the ends of the line. First, secure the working end of the line: pass it through several beads across the beadwork, then trim off the excess line. After that thread a needle on the starting tail of the line, weave it into the beadwork in the same manner and then trim.
If you attach a ring (chain/rope) for keys to this beaded fabric, you can use it as a keychain.
